In the United States, a notary public is a person who certifies and attests to the authenticity of documents (in English), takes depositions and affidavits, among other things.
Notarial intervention increases confidence in legal documents and reduces fraud. Notaries are impartial witnesses that the grantors of documents are what they say they are and with this they increase legal certainty. However, the fact that private documents are signed before a notary does not guarantee that the content of the document is true.
